       In most instances, more than one form of identification is required. Some states ask for as much as three proofs of identity and are quite specific in their regulations.

       This is actually a protection against identity theft, making it more difficult for someone to pretend to be you. For this reason, most states will deny a birth certificate copy to anything substituted for the kind of identification they require.

Not all birth certificates have the time of birth. If you ask for the long form when you order your birth certificate this will enable you to request your birth time.

       As a rule, State-kept Birth Records become more available and accurate after the early 1900's, becoming increasingly easier to obtain as the years get nearer to the present. Older Birth Records sometimes have to be sought through the local counties or communities where birth occurred. In many instances, these records may go back several centuries, even as far back as the 1700's. Yet, the further they go back, the more these records become sparse and harder to obtain.
