Astrologer View: Thanksgiving
If anyone has ever doubted the power of astrology, this month might be a good time to realize how much it
influences our lives. As we approach Thanksgiving, we are reminded of how even the Congress of the United
States has bent to the will of Astrological mandates.
Although the first Thanksgiving was in 1621, it took more than 300 years before this festive celebration became
part of the national calendar. Its original meaning comes down to us from a small group of grateful Pilgrims,
whose intention was to share their harvest with the American Indians, who had in the spring of that year taught
them how to grow corn by using fertilizer made from fish.
For two centuries, state governors had the power to determine when (or if) a Thanksgiving would be held. Finally,
in 1863 President Abraham Lincoln issued a proclamation declaring Thanksgiving as a national holiday, which every
President since has honored.
However, in 1939, President Roosevelt moved Thanksgiving from the last Thursday of November to the third
Thursday in order to squeeze a few more shopping days into the Christmas season. This changed Thanksgiving from
Sagittarius (the sign of Nature's Abundance) to Scorpio (a sign of Struggle).
Now here comes the interesting part. This change proved so unpopular that in 1941, Congress changed
the date of Thanksgiving back to the fourth Thursday of November, permanantly fixing it to be celebrated
in Sagittarius (the sign of joyous open giving, sharing, and prayerful gratefulness for abundance)
rather than Scorpio.
Since Thanksgiving is also marked by the Macys Day Parade, as well as Football, it becomes even more
fitting that this holiday should be during Sagittarius the sign of parades and sports. And, oh yes,
before you push that chair back from the table, remember that Sagittarius is also the sign of
excess!
So, maybe it doesn't matter whether or not Congress believes in Astrology, as long as they obey
what it means!
More importantly, since America is a multicultural nation, this special celebration of Thanksgiving brings this
spirit of sharing and gratitude to the many different nationalities, religions, and diverse cultures which
make up her population.

FULL MOON IN GEMINI - Beaver Moon
Northeastern Native Americans had names for the different Full Moons, as they often symbolized important events
of Indian life. The recurrance of each named Full Moon, would help them to mark changes in the
seasons each year.
So important were these events to the American Indians, that they would designate an entire month to each
named Full Moon. In early American life, the Algonquin tribes followed by European settlers saw November
as the time to set beaver traps before the winter frost, so that a supply of winter furs could be obtained.
The beavers themselves during this time would be making their own preparations for winter. As such, the
November Full Moon (regardless of the sign it occurs in) has come to be known as the Beaver Moon.
Whether viewed from the point of view of the hunters or the hunted, this November Moon signifies activities
to protect from the elements of winter,- the cold, the frost, the scarcity of food.
Since this Full Moon occurs in Gemini (opposite the Sun in Sagittarius), we have to consider the importance
of the mutability of these two signs to understand the full meaning of this opposition. Mutability
brings about change, which comes from the willingness to be open to learn new ideas. Gemini symbolizes
communication, yet the very duality of the sign itself in opposition to the higher-minded philosophical
outlook of Sagittarius, hints that conflict must be overcome before real change can take place.
Gemini is always a sign of conflict, but it is not the conflict of opposites that causes the difficulties.
Rather, it is the different legendary levels of its symbolic twins, Castor and Pollux. With one twin
mortal and the other immortal, the duality of Gemini comes from looking at matters from these two very
different perspectives.
The mortal twin knowing that some day it will die, does not quite understand the immortal consequences of
its actions and tends to constantly take a single-life limited point of view, while the immortal twin
looks beyond the flippant whimsies of the moment and instead concerns itself with more soul-like and
immortal consequences.
The immortal twin of Gemini understands the consequences of Karma and Reincarnation. The mortal twin
does not. In a sense, the mortal twin holds back the progress of the immortal twin, by the mere fact
that its outlook and decisions are based on surviving in the present life. Yet, without survival
in the present life, the concerns of the immortal twin would be pointless.
Yet, the point of the mind is to think and without conflict there would be no thought. At this full
Moon, the dualties of Gemini, with all of its abilities to emotionally analyze inconsistancies,
opposing the higher minded outlook of Sagittarius, with all of its philosophical perspectives, bring
to our attention the unresolved conflicts that exist in world communication.
With Gemini ruling the lower mind (every-day thoughts and ideas) and Sagittarius ruling
the higher mind (beliefs, concepts, principles and truths), we get a chance to see our ideals and
our shortcomings as human beings, always striving for a higher truth, yet realizing that we must
not be too harsh with ourselves if we are not all there yet!
And, mostly, at this very important time, we must be tolerant of others, even if their language
is different than our own, or their ways of thinking conflict us,- for they too have their ideals
of perfection, yet, like us, are not quite one with all,- yet!
Blessings,
Martin Schulman
