Astrologer View: A Convergence of Events

The Winter Solstice marking the beginning of winter in the northern hemisphere (summer in the southern hemisphere) occurs on December 22, 2007 at 1:08 A.M. EST (06:08 Universal Time). At this time, the Sun at its greatest distance from the celestial equator, shines over the sign, Capricorn and marks the shortest day of the year (from sunrise to sunset).

Because of the Earth's 23.5 degree tilt on its axis, the northern hemisphere receives less sunlight at this time than at any other time during the year.

Since sunlight has a great deal to do with psychological mood, emotional attitudes, and well-being, is it any wonder that more people get punched in the nose during the holiday season? The fact is, that with less sunlight, people are apt to be less tolerant, more impatient, and generally frustrated.

Yet, if astrology teaches us anything, it shows us that our universe is always in balance if only we could see it. Less of something means more of something else. Less sunlight (shorter days) means longer nights which give us more time to reflect and focus on our inner selves.

During this time of quiet restfulness, we can be more contained and pay attention to how life works better when we plan and schedule our actions toward purpose (Capricorn) instead of acting on impulsive emotions.

At this same time, we are also experiencing a changing Jupiter transit, which after its traversing through Sagittarius (its rulership position), it now enters Capricorn, lending further significance to how much good fortune (Jupiter) favors those who carefully contain their life within sensible plans and reasonable schedules (Capricorn).

For a year, as Jupiter traverses Capricorn until the first week of 2009, we must stay clear of anything that smacks of gambling or taking unnecessary chances with anything that isn't grounded in the solid earth element, as Capricorn tells us that our sincerest efforts will bring more achievements than any unearned expectation of luck!

Perhaps the most important thing we can come to realize from this Jupiter in Capricorn transit, is that the wisdom of the higher mind (Jupiter) flourishes with age, experience and most of all patience (Capricorn). Sometimes, we try to do too many things at a time which only makes us confused. Capricorn puts a containment on the expansiveness of Jupiter so that we can learn to put our optimism and hopes (Jupiter) into worthwhile projects (Capricorn) instead of wasting oursevles in too many divergent tangents.

There is one more convergent event at this time worth noting. As we enter this Holiday Season of Joy and Giving, may we never forget how important it is karmically for us to be a blessing to all who our lives touch. Remember this: Nobody is put in our life unless there is something we can teach them and learn from them!

FULL MOON IN CANCER - (rulership)The Cold Wolf Moon

On December 23, 5:16 pm with the Sun at 2 degrees of Capricorn and the Moon at 2 degrees of Cancer, we experience the winter full moon.

This is often called the Cold Moon, referring to the long cold nights of this season, as well as in Native North American Indian culture, the Wolf Moon, because of the wolves incessant howling from their hunger during these often food-sparse snow-covered winter nights.

Astrologically, it is the Moon in its rulership, where the warmth of family (Cancer) and the huddling instinct of like kind brings people together in common protective instincts to form a shelter of emotions from the coldness of weather or the coldness of world-cruelty in the never-ending battle for preservation (Capricorn).

In this sense, it is fitting to remember the symbol of the "Wolf," for it reminds us that even the toughtest of animals find protection in their "pack." In human life, this is our family, and in a larger sense, our family of like-minded people, with whom we share our hopes and dreams for a better future and a happier life.

Most importantly, this full moon teaches us the Karmic Lesson that what we sow emotionally, we will reap in time.
