ASTROLOGER VIEW: The Cancer / Leo Cusp

Astrology often reveals to us the very deepest of mysteries, especially when we are not looking for them. One of these can be found in that very special area where a zodiac sign ends and the following sign begins.

Here, Astrology reserves 3 degrees of each adjacent sign as that sensitive area where we feel both signs influencing each other. We call this the Cusp of the sign. What makes this especially interesting is the fact that here we experience the higher evolved degrees of one sign, blending with the primeval less-evolved degrees of another sign.

If this were not enough to make the cusp a special place in a chart, consider that in each instance, the two signs involved are of opposite magnetic polarities. Thus, the Aries-Taurus cusp starting at 27 degrees of Aries and ending at 3 degrees of Taurus, combines the positive masculine qualities of Aries in its highest evolvement, with the negative feminine qualities of Taurus in its most instinctive primitive earthiness.

Each cusp experience combines the full realization or higher qualities of the first sign in its last 3 degrees, with a curious glimpse or hint at what the expeirences of the next sign might have to offer in its first 3 degrees.

Thus, a two-sign Cusp is really 6 degrees, and nowhere can we see how important a cusp can be than by studying the Cancer-Leo Cusp. These two signs bear special interest in the chart because they signify a special path in life that the individual takes. Cancer rules birth, the very roots of the soul, one's beginnings, childhood and all the nurturing received from mother. In this feminine-water sign, we take sustenance which helps us to grow into what will some day become the blossoming fullness of our life.

In Leo, we reach for the aspirations of father as we create our adult life, deciding what our spirit of creation must stand for and the guiding principles we will choose to live by.

It is as if a plant grows from a tiny bud (Cancer) shielded by surrounding leaves wrapped tightly around it, yet not fully opened, which eventually will grow to display the full blossom of its creation as the warm energy it receives brings it to its finished glory and beauty (Leo).

This special cusp is ruled by the two luminaries, the Moon and the Sun, symbolically representing Mother (the maternal instinct and protective indwelling consciousness) eventually yielding to Father (the paternal instinct of external strength, character and power). In this way, the cusp marks the journey from seed to flower, from dependency to responsibility, for it symbolizes how we build character.

In each chart, this very important Cancer-Leo cusp will appear in a different part of the horoscope, thus laying out the guideposts of this journey according to the experiences of the Astrological House in which this cusp appears.

In this way, the individual gets to experience the love, sustenance and light of their parents wishes for them, in a very particular area of life. Yet, if they are to benefit from this, they must put forth the effort to earn realistic value for themself in the highest degrees of the first sign before they can experience a rewarding consciousness in the second sign.

Thus, if an individual karmically faces themself in the House where the Cancer cusp appears, works on their emotions, develops true loyalties, and cultivates sincere comradery with others, then they can enjoy the Leo cusp that follows in the same House because they have made themselves ready for this experience.

To see this, consider two extreme examples of how this Cancer-Leo cusp might affect one's life. Imagine a Cancer-Leo cusp occurring in the Fifth House in a female chart. Her higher more evolved degrees are from 27-30 degrees Cancer, in the Pisces decanate of the Sign. If she misuses the Cancer degrees of this cusp, she might easily find herself in possessive relationships that are too difficult for her. Unable to master the constant testing of her strengths, she becomes needy,- ultimately over emotionalizing and possibly looking for escapism in alcohol or drugs (in this double-influence from the water element in the Fifth House of personal pleasure).

Consider the opposite extreme, with the same placement occurring in a chart where she makes the effort to realize that these higher degrees of Cancer will always be tested until she learns what it is she has to master. In this instance, she will undoubtedly come to understand how important it is for her to recreate her own mother in herself, effectively giving birth to a new set of beliefs (Pisces decanate) that fulfill her creative imaginaton. If she can do this, then the early degrees of Leo that follow become a rewarding and pride-filling experience, as she can bathe in the sunshine of her sincere efforts.

Since our most important karmic lessons are taught to us by those individuals who are in our lives the longest and represent the closest ties to us, - the parental lessons of the Luminaries (Moon and Sun) in this cusp, will give us very important insight to the karma of our Moon's Nodes. Here our parental influence forces us to put in a special effort to learn something that our Nodes need for us to complete our karmic path, yet we are finding the lesson, particularly difficult to accept.

Think of your own chart. Think of the Signs and Houses your Nodes are in and the Karmic Lessons you have incarnated to learn this time around. Then find the House where the Cancer-Leo cusp occurs and you will experience a revelation,- for here you will get a special clue as to how your Nodes can be achieved by finding your birth to fulfillment path (Cancer-Leo) that the parents your soul picked in this life have laid out for you.

Having already experienced a New Moon in Cancer earlier in the Month, this is one of those rare occasions where we will again experience a New Moon in Cancer on July 21, 2009. This time it will be at the very highest degrees of the Sign. Moreover, this has special significance as it occurs along with a total solar eclipse.

All of this will happen within the Cancer-Leo cusp, right near the fixed star Aludra (the back of the dog) which is of the nature of Venus. For those of us who aspire to know what the universe is trying to tell us, there is a cosmic birth taking place at this time.

Cancer is a cardinal sign, signifying new beginnings from the water element. We could see new methods of nurturing introduced into our consciousness, particularly in America (a Cancer Sun country). Cancerian beginnings are always emotional, heart-rendering and soul-satisfying, yet eclipses by nature often bring a bit of shock value with them, sometimes creating a sensitive point in the zodiac that gets triggered later whenever planets cross that exact same place.

Thus, we might hear Cancerian promises that makes our hearts swell, only to be followed by criticism or difficulties that forestall the Cancerian nurturing. We may expect to see Governments reaching out in parent-like ways with compassion (Pisces decanate of Cancer) which ultimately turn into power fights (early degrees of Leo) as this New Moon Eclipse plays itself out through the Cancer-Leo Cusp.
