ASTROLOGER VIEW: A Look at Addiction

     One of the great problems of our modern times is how to fit into an ever-changing society that is constantly shaping our thoughts and dreams. As we try to define who we are, the world itself is molding its own matrix around us,- coaxing us to fit into a larger whole, telling us what we need to do and how to live in order to effectively join this womblike environment we call civilization. Yet, to do this, many of us become victims of addiction, from its most mild forms to increasingly uncomfortable states of being.

By definition, an addiction is "the state of being enslaved to a habit or practice or to something that is psychologically or physically habit-forming.., to such an extent that its cessation causes severe trauma."

The fact is, anything we have come to depend on can become addictive, for being without it, even for the slightest amount of time, is painful. Consider your own habits. Do you watch televsion? Do you watch the same shows frequently and go into even a momentary depressive state of mind if they are canceled, delayed or for any reason not aired when you expect them?

When you go somewhere, do you always go the same way, becoming upset if a street is temporarily closed? Do you mow the lawn on the same day each week, find yourself getting angry if it rains?

These are but a few examples of mild habit patterns that through repetition can easily become addictive. But, there are other patterns that can actually be destructive.

There is the incessant mind game of justifying your actions, even when you know you are clearly in the wrong. Do you continue an argument, beyond what it needs to be, merely because you have become ego-involved in it? Do you carry grudges, years after the stimuli that started them is no longer present? This kind of behavior may be a hint that other addictions are lurking in your life.

Common addictions such as smoking, over-eating, texting, alcohol and narcotics have become a heavy weight on society's ability to evolve, as these slowly deprive so many individuals from participating in how life can really be fulfilling.

There have been many attempts at treating addictions, ranging from the psychological and psychiatric to the medical and even esoteric approaches such as yoga and meditation. All of these work to some extent, yet none of them do the trick in all instances.

There was once an individual who had trouble with their anger. They went to a guru to solve the problem. After listening quietly for some time, the guru replied.

   "Please show me your anger now."
The indivudal was surprised and flustered at what the guru asked, and at a loss for words, said,
   "Much as I try, I cannot display my anger for you to see."
At this, the guru smiled and said,
   "Then the anger is not yours."

We carry things in our memories, perhaps even subconsciously for years, without realizing it. Astrology, as the science of birth, the quintessence of beginnings of everything, teaches us that if we want to treat a problem, we must go back to its source. This means going back to our own source,- our natal chart, and finding within it, why, how and when the problem began.

Addictions start innocently enough. The individual tries pot because of peer pressure. The alcoholic starts with a drink, perhaps because of a dare or simply out of curiosity.The point is we cannot say that alcoholism is due to an afflicted Neptune, or that all addictions necessarily start for the same reason, or are even influenced by the same planetary aspects or placements.

In fact, contrary to naive simplistic thinking, addictions occur for such a vast multitude of reasons that it is never any one planet in a chart that can be pointed to as the culprit. For the addiction itself is not an event, but rather a process that evolves over time, until it eventually forms a destructive or harmful habit pattern that becomes so intertwined in the individual's life that it is like an acceptible companion to their every need..

You may have developed a bad habit under a particular configuration of planets that occurred many years ago. This may have helped set off a propensity for weakness in your own natal chart. Yet, the planets have moved on and are no longer setting off that weakness, or even providing what you perceived to be negative stimuli then.

If you can bring yourself back in time to when the addictive habit began, noting carefully the planetary aspects that affected your chart then, you will get your first clue as to what the problem is about. Once you do this, you can view this event retroactively from the safe distance of time,- impassionately enough to objectively understand it more maturely.

Most addictions come from the failure to address karmic problems, thus substituting escape mechanisms for treatment by creating alternate habit routes in the mind or emotional body, so that the end effect is not having to deal with or address the original problem, or the karmic debt owed.

Unfortunately, the longer one does this, the greater the debt becomes, the heavier it weighs on the consciousness and the more depressed the individual feels about ever addressing the original cause.

Eventually the method chosen to escape with, becomes ingrained into the individual's Saturn. As the behavior grows more structured with each repetition, the habit starts to enjoy passive acceptance which then allows it to slip into the unconscious realms of behavior (Neptune and Pluto), where it becomes so deeply disguised that one has to search to find it before any treatment can take place.

Yet, it is the Saturnian nature of patterning over long periods of time that is both the most stubborn as well as the most defining characteristic of any addiction.

Saturn behavior is quite interesting to observe, because given similar sets of circumstances, the expected reactions become competely predictable. It is almost like a rat running a maze, constantly taking the same path, again and again.

When individuals act this way, they might be thought of as stubborn or recalcitrant, with little control over the direction their lives are taking. Yet, the fact is, these individuals are running on a clearly-defined Saturnian path that feels safe to them, because of its familiarity. They know it does not lead to what they want, but the lack of surprise or anything unexpected is somehow comforting to them. Thus, the repetitive behavior continues,- eventually reaching addictive propor- tions.

The reason most people feel that addictions are not treatable until the individual has hit bottom is because when the Saturnian patterning becomes so bad, it often takes a Pluto-like event to surface it. Thus, the person might have inflicted psychological or personal injury or harm to themself or others, or caused a life-threatening situation that brought attention to their extreme behavior.

Once the out-of-proportion pattern is exposed, the addiction is robbed of its greatest power over the individual, - for it is only amidst aloneness and isolation from love and attention that addictions can thrive. Thus, the external attention of others is often the first step to a new path. It is almost as if the problem is being surfaced to the Ascendant, where the individual can admit their identification with its hold on them and accept the willing help of others.

Yet, even then, the difficulty in treating any addiction is that a new path must be found, and the individual must be deprived of the old, safely-repetitive incorrect path that was blocking self-growth. Thus, the individual's Saturn must be shaken up a little, deprived of its dependencies and refocused in a new direction.

There is a hexagram in the I Ching that talks about the need for "the vessel to be overturned." This implies the finding of a completely new way, after clearing out the old obsessiveness that became addictive.

What makes this difficult at first, is that the behavior ingrained in Saturn may have years and years of habit patterns within it, measured against just a handful of tries to establish new patterns. The sheer weight of time makes the process of change a painful one, until gradually the individual starts to see some rewards from the new behavior.

What is most important to consider here, is that of all the methods used to treat addctions, the only one that will work the best is the one that specifically addresses the karmic conditions in the chart, both when the problem started and now, so that a full reappraisal of how to replace old patterns with new ones become possible.

It is interesting to note that individuals who have overcome addictions lead much happier and fulfilling lives, often not even having the slightest thought of going back to the addictive beheavior they had endured for so long. They use their Saturn in new and more life-approaching ways, as they establish new patterns of behavior that are both more functional to themselves while being more supportive of others as well.

The December "Cold Moon" opposition between the Moon and Sun on Dec 2, 2009, brings with it a great deal of controversy over opposing ideas. Each side tries to teach the other. Emotional short-sightedness appears to be at odds with the greater vision.

This opposition between lower-mind emotions (Moon in Gemini) and the higher-minded self (Sun in Sagittarius) can bring about legal entanglements, particulary in Congressional legislation rhetoric.

On a more personal level, this Full Moon opposition brings one to consider matters from different points of view, spend more time information gathering so that one's ultimate resolve can be based more on facts than opinion.

Both Gemini and Sagittarius are mutable signs and with the air of Gemini fueling the fire of Sagittarius, there can be many changes of mind, quickly, unexpectedly and at times seeming even irrational. These two signs can be impatient, often more anxious to be heard than to listen, making this opposition a difficult one for reaching understanding.

Yet, oppositions are the very things that push matters to a head by extreming them enough to call attention to their need for care. Examine your ideas and attitudes to see if you are objectively centered. Make corrections during this mutable event so that you do not find yourself out of balance.

If a relationship is already strained, this is a time to try to see things from the other person's point of view in order to understand them better. You may not be able to coerce another to your way of thinking, but you need not alienate them if you choose your words carefully.

We so often think of Gemini and Sagittarius as mental signs that we sometimes forget these signs also rule physical movement, mobility, day-to-day traveling as well as long journeys. Sometimes, a change of scenery is all it takes to give us a new vantage point on life that can help us to understand our problems from a more objective view.

However, in 1939, President Roosevelt moved Thanksgiving from the last Thursday of November to the third Thursday in order to squeeze a few more shopping days into the Christmas season. This changed Thanksgiving from Sagittarius (the sign of Nature's Abundance) to Scorpio (a sign of Struggle).

Now here comes the interesting part. This change proved so unpopular that in 1941, Congress changed the date of Thanksgiving back to the fourth Thursday of November, permanantly fixing it to be celebrated in Sagittarius (the sign of joyous open giving, sharing, and prayerful gratefulness for abundance) rather than Scorpio.

Since Thanksgiving is also marked by the Macys Day Parade, as well as Football, it becomes even more fitting that this holiday should be during Sagittarius the sign of parades and sports. And, oh yes, before you push that chair back from the table, remember that Sagittarius is also the sign of excess!

So, maybe it doesn't matter whether or not Congress believes in Astrology, as long as they obey what it means!
