ASTROLOGER VIEW: The Mysterious Missing Element

     The Ancients have given us a system by which to help us understand the world around us and our place in it. In all their wisdom, they could never have foretold the complexities that man has made of our modern universe.

Yet, they did manage to identify and categorize four distinct states of existence, which to this day, Astrology still finds important. They noted the presence of four elements, Fire, Earth, Air and Water, devising a system whereby each sign of the zodiac could be assigned its own unique identity. With only 4 Elements to fit 12 Signs, this system gives each Element, three Zodiac Signs, thus creating a trinity or triad of levels through which each of the different elements can be experienced.

As we go through the Zodiac Signs, these assignments follow a specific order. Thus, Aries is the first or basic level of the Fire Element trinity. The next Fire Sign in the Zodiac would be Leo, which makes it the second level of this element. Finally, the last Fire Sign is Sagittarius, which makes it the third or highest level of this Fire Element triad.

By this same reasoning, we can find all of the assignments for how each Zodiac Sign finds its place in this Element structure.

What becomes most interesting is to see how these Elements are expressed in actual horoscope charts. Allowing for individual variances, most charts tend to touch all elements, but not to even amounts. Thus, an individual might have a propensity towards one of the elements and possibly a weakness in others. Typically we find at least 1 planet in every element with usually not more than 4 or 5 in any one.

The differing ways that charts favor some elements over others gives us some very strong clues as to the karma the individual is trying to deal with as well as the approaches they might use to do this. Thus, because of the elements, we are able to distinguish how an individual is likely to act in any given situation.

A person with many fire planets is apt to explode easier, be more impatient and often take a pro-active stance towards life's problems and challenges. Another individual with more air planets might spend their time thinking out their situations, considering their options and studying their consequences before acting. Yet, there is always good and bad in every element. Too much of the Air Element can make a person flighty, irresponsable with tendencies to avoid commitments.

There are many different nuances to how different combinations of planetary elements in a chart can be expressed. Yet, every now and then, we come across the odd or different kind of situation, where even our widest allowing for differences between individuals, seems to offer litttle to explain the extremely anomalous chart.

This is the case of the missing element, where one of the four elements has no planet at all in it. Our first instinct tells us that individuals with this kind of horoscope experience difficulties with everything the missing element represents. Not being in touch with its energy, they do not easily understand its meaning, because for them, it really does not exist as part of their life experience.

This begs the question, why would a soul karmically be born into a life missing one of the essential elements? Could it be that the individual does not really need that element in this life to accomplish the karmic reason for which they were born? This seems a very likely explanation, which even more pushes the individual to focus on what they need to.

Yet, on a very humane level we can empathize for how difficult matters become on even the simplest of levels for such a person.

Imagine if you will, the individual with no Air planets (nothing in Gemini, Libra or Aquarius). They tend to plod thorugh life, doing things which to our viewpoint may seem to be the hard way, for they lack identification with thought on the three very important levels. They have difficulty expressing themselves (lack of Gemini Air), balancing comparisons (lack of Libra Air) as well as contacting impersonal universal thought (lack of Aquarius Air). As a result, this kind of individual tends to exert more physical and emotional energy to almost everything they do, because it is difficult for them to conceptualize as well as objectively view themself in relation to their environment.

An individual without water planets (nothing in Cancer, Scorpio or Pisces) has difficulty understanding the feeling side of life. They might practice expressing emotions, but they do not really know how to feel them or trust them. This kind of individual misses the psychological sensitivities, as well as the deep psychic and spiritual essence of life. Basically they have difficulty being in tune with how people feel about them, which makes their relationships extremely unbalanced. Former President Bill Clinton had no water planets in his chart, which explains why many of his emotional relationships (water rules emotion) got out of hand. (See horoscope) But, even more important, it explains how he would keep trying to reach people to become an emotional part of them.

According to a very important principle of balance, individual's with something lacking in their life generally sense that lack and will expend a great deal of energy to overcompensate for it.

In Astrology, those with something conspicuously missing in their charts tend to seek out individuals to be near who fill this void. This sheds a different light on Bill Clinton's marriage to Hillary Clinton (a Scorpio), showing us how the water quality of her Sign would help him to feel the emotional depth that he might otherwise be missing. This reaching to fill the void could be felt in his speeches and his mannerisms as an almost pleading for emotional acceptance. Years later, this lack of the water element continues to prompt him to travel the world, reaching for emotional acceptance in great charity work.

Some charts have no Earth planets (nothing in Taurus, Virgo or Capricorn). These individuals have a great deal of difficulty in their relationship with physical life and earth matter. They tend to abstract, lose themselves in concepts or ethereal dreams and aspirations, while displaying a marked weakness for practical "down to earth" common sense. Yet, here too, the argument exists that there has to be a karmic reason for an individual to be born with such a chart.

Those who are not that much in touch with the earth plane are much freer to dream and rise on air, alternately fueled by the fire of their enthusiasm with emotions not grounded in any sense of containment. These individuals tend to lack an anchor to earth reality and have difficulty understanding how much the consequences of their actions influence others, who have to put in the actual earth struggles they sometimes cause.

The cause and effect relationships that occur because of missing element charts are also quite interesting, since each of these individuals feels impelled to depend on another or many others to fill in the missing element.

In fact, most individuals with a missing element in their chart try so hard to make up for it, that they exaggerate that area of their life until the experiences represented by it become so unexpectedly beyond anything they could ever possibly exert control over. For good or bad, they have gone beyond a point of no return, and somehow cannot seem to contain the effects of the missing element.

Babe Ruth had no planets in Fire Signs. To make up for this, he expended great amounts of energy to enthuse and excite others. Who could forget him pointing to the centerfield stands only seconds before hitting a home run exactly where he pointed. The more he would do things like this, the more his experiences outgrew his intentions, until he became such an exeggerative larger than life character, that he could not seem to stop the carousing, the drinking and the parties that became so much a part of his fiery lifestyle.

Angelina Jolie has no planets in Earth Signs. As most Gemini's tend to live vicariously through others, she keeps trying to fill this lack of earth in her own chart, by adopting children from underdeveloped countries, who have almost no earth matter possessions, as she gives them the security they never could have known. Yet, because she travels to do this so frequently, while defending the numerous causes she believes in, it is difficult for her to control any sense of earthly stability in her own life.

In many instances, it is almost as if the individual tends to overcompensate for the missing element to such an extent that they never realize when they lose control and their efforts start to create such wide-reaching effects, that they have no choice but to change their life to fit the disproportionate effects they caused.

Bill Gates also has no earth planets, yet his efforts to compensate for this missing element have resulted in him becoming one of the richest men in the world. At some point, the amounts he earned began to far surpass anything he could possibly spend in a lifetime for even the most extravagent imagineable need. Yet, Gates is not an extravagent soul. In recent years he has become a philanthropist, spending most of his time reaching out to charity. In the years when he made so much money, it was far beyond anything he could ever possibly expect to deal with. The same is true during the years he is giving so much away, as the needs he senses in the world, spiral way beyond what even the most generous philanthropic soul could ever fulfill.

The mysterious missing element brings a life of unexpected exaggeration, starting with attempts to make up for a sense of lack, but often winding up as the sole consuming force that envelops the individual's life. Yet, somewhere along the way, something unforseen is discovered. The individual touches something beyond themself, and somehow, the very spirit of all mankind could hope to be, reaches out to meet their efforts and guide them to serve a special need in humanity that will be remembered forever!

The expression once in a "blue moon" is derived from those rare instances when a Full Moon occurs twice in the same month. After the Full Moon in Gemini on Dec. 2, we will experience a second Full Moon, this time in Cancer, on Dec. 31, as we get ready for the New Year.

This will bring a close to the past as well as a new emotional beginning for the year to come. Often, we greet this time with all the resolve and energetic enthusiasm of new beginnings. It is as if someone has magically erased our sins of the past (our karma) and we can start anew without the baggage of our history.

Yet, because the New Year starts on a Full Moon, it begins a two week period of Consciousness, where our ability to indwell and reflect becomes more important than chasing the outer life. A tone of caution (Capricorn) and care (Cancer) will prevail as we mull over how to deal with parental, work and family conflicts, seeking fresh yet mature solutions to appreciate and understand our close relationships that color our emotional lives.

Capricorn rules the wisdom of the ancients. Cancer symbolizes the beginnings of life. Conflicts between immature emotional expression and a restrained sense of practicality can be objectively studied during this time if we use it for inner searching.

We may find our answers closer to home and family (Cancer) as we remember the traditions (Capricorn) that have always brought meaning to our lives.

The Winter Solstice will occur in the Northern Hemisphere on December 21, 2009 at 12:47 PM EST.(Summer Season in the Southern Hemisphere). At this time, the Sun at its greatest distance from the celestial equator, shines over the sign, Capricorn and marks the shortest day of the year (from sunrise to sunset). Because of the Earth's 23.5 degree tilt on its axis, the northern hemisphere receives less sunlight at this time than at any other time during the year. Capricorn is a Karmic Sign, and as the Sun enters it during the last week of December, this prompts us to look at the results of our efforts during the year, see the connection between our doing and our being, and most important of all, study in quiet reflection what we have done to fulfill the needs not only of our pockets, but of our conscience. Interestingly, Capricorn rules both guilt and self-respect, and because it is not possible to have both, it is our Karmic choice to decide which of these will resonate within our souls. The more we look inside ourselves to find a higher moral purpose to our lives, the more we become aware of our opportunities to experience gratitude. If we are to realize the true potential in our own evolvement, we must be forgiving of those whose karma makes them less fortunate than us, and whose 'spiritual ignorance' makes it difficult for them to learn as quickly as we can. As we enter the Joyous Holiday Season, may we never forget how karmically important it is for us to also realize the Capricorn lessons of patience and tolerance, for even the most beautiful of flowers take time to blossom.
