ASTROLOGER VIEW: The Karma of Athletes

    Looking through our recently upgraded Athletes horoscopes, it occurred to me that nothing proves the karmic and spiritual aspects of astrology more than the ways an individual chooses to use their physical life.

When we think of sports figures, we are dealing with the karma of exemplary proficiency. Though the sport each indi- vidual pursues may be different, as well as their approach to it, their physical efforts reach a "larger than life" status that captures our imagination. This also exaggerates their challenges, successes and failures many times, and in so doing, affords us a better magnified glimpse to see and study the lessons their lives are showing us.

One would think that most of these charts show strong physical leanings and yet in most instances, this is not so. Instead, it is how the person applies the spiritual intangibles of life, those ethereal qualities that one would hardly notice in a physical world, that makes them reach super-human proportions.

Babe Ruth had a Tenth House North Node in Pisces and a Fourth House South Node in Virgo. Spending much of his own childhood in an orphanage, he had the opportunity to observe first-hand, the needs of innocent, unfortunate children, most of whom were lacking the presence of a parental "hero" figure to guide them. He never forgot these early years as he would again and again use his Pisces North Node in adult life (Tenth House) to inspire and care for the hopes and wishes of the children of the world.

As is often the case in so many individuals who have achieved exemplary status, the Aquarius Sun stands as the indicator that he would use all his efforts to be "different," both on and off the baseball diamond. We often find that any chart with Aquarius prominent indicates an individual who plans their life along a certain course, and then for unforseen reasons, they make a change during adult life that eventually comes to define them.

From being one of the greatest picthers in baseball, Ruth had to change his direction completely in order to be in the lineup more frequently where the team could benefit from his uncanny home run hitting abilities (60 home runs in a season without the help of steroids ). From not really having a home of his own in chidhood, his devotion to children (enhanced by the Cancer Moon working with the South Node in the Fourth House) ultimately became the feeling and flavor of Yankee Stadium, eventually to be known as- "The house that Ruth built!"

Yet, Ruth was not alone in facing the karmic challenges of life. Imagine how difficult it must have been for Jackie Robinson to become the first African-American major league baseball player. Interestingly enough, he was also an Aquarius with a karma to bring about change. Remember the sign Aquarius always points to the common good, the universal unification of the human race. Towards this end, Robinson's life and career brought an end to racial segregation in sports.

Here we see the exact opposite Nodes by Houses with a Fourth House North Node in Sagittarius and a Tenth House South Node in Gemini. Both mutable signs indicate a karma to change world consciousness, making the transition from the lower mind of Gemini (fraught with racial differences, unfair comparisons and inequality) to the higher mind of Sagittarius (which rules hope, spirit, and a fervent outlook towards life).

In order to communicate the ideas that racial prejudice were largely stereotypes rooted in the lower mind that would only repeat past generation consciousness (Gemini 'parroting'), Jackie Robinson displayed the finer qualities of this sign in his nearly-perfect manner of elocution. With a clear and educated voice he would change forever (with these mutable communicative Nodes) the aura of the American Black male.

It is amazing how racial differences disappear almost instantly when one thinks of his incredible steal of home plate, while the pitcher was watching him,- a feat so daringly and incomparably different that it makes us take notice at the measure and mettle of this one of a kind individual. Yet, the message he was to deliver did not end on the playing field.

Robinson retired from baseball relatively young and became the first African-American television analyst in Major League Baseball, as well as the first African-American vice-president of a major American corporation.

Elected on the first ballot, he became the first African-American inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown museum. In recognition of his achievements on and off the field, Robinson was posthumously awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom and the Congressional Gold Medal.

Roberto Clemente was one of the finest baseball players and humanitarians to ever grace the public stage. His remarkable passion and sense of spirituality paved the way for Latin players to perform in the major leagues. He believed that "any time you have an opportunity to make a difference in this world and you don’t, then you are wasting your time on earth."

Here we see how the passion of the Leo South Node and its intense ferver would have to achieve greatness enough to be noticed before the North Node in Aquarius could be expressed. It was through this North Node that Clemente expressed the universal Aquarian caring for the common good, amidst a life that ultimately made him one of the most admired humanitarians in sports.

From early beginnings in poverty, he taught himself English in the major leagues. Yet, even his notable achievements on the field, such as playing in a National League All Star team for 12 seasons, achieving over 3,000 hits and being inducted into the Hall of Fame, tell only part of the story, for Clemente never forgot his roots and put considerable effort towards helping those less fortunate. He created the Roberto Clemente Sports City that serves 300,000 visitors a year and never turns away a poor child.

In recent years, professional sports has suffered many setbacks amid dark moments that have dampened our beliefs. We have seen scandals with gambling, steroids, and inappropriate conduct. Yet, it is important for us to remember why we love the professional athlete so much, by looking not to those who shook our faith, but rather to those who have built it for us, and have given so much of themselves to inspire us to reach for our own physical and spiritual potential.<

The Virgo Full Moon on February 28th. affords us the opportunity to decide what kind of master we serve. Virgo, the ever-faithful servant, symbolizes service to the self, mental as well as physical well-being and finding order in our working methods.

This Full Moon opposition to the Sun is to teach us to find balance between the formless ethereal world of Neptune-ruled Pisces and the ever-present demands of our every-day life. An individual is empty or hollow without their beliefs (Pisces). Yet, at the same time, attention to our present existence in the real world, is required for us to function (Virgo).

This is an important balance to achieve along the path of enlightenment and not an easy one to reach. The guru is comfortable on the mountain but may be too sensitive to ride in a subway.

The minutest of emotional details (Virgo Full Moon) become important at this time, for they often hold within them the hidden facts of matters which eventually show us great truths beyond anything we may have imagined.

This Full Moon will bring into focus the two Houses in your chart where Virgo and Pisces are, accentuating the matters ruled by those houses. Although the opportunities for objective understanding are highest at the Full Moon itself, the effect gradually wanes over a period of two weeks before the next New Moon, giving you time to sift and consider all that comes into your consciousness from this aspect.

Remember, this is a mutable Full Moon, signifying both inner soul (Pisces) as well as outer mundane (Virgo) changes, that can help you to find objective balance between your spiritual development and the attention your personal earth life needs.
